Dr Roshan Gunathilake FRACP

Specialist Geriatrician

 

Dr Roshan Gunathilake is a Newcastle-based specialist Geriatrician and General Physician with special interest in the care of the acutely unwell older persons, cognitive disorders such as dementia and delirium, falls, and perioperative medicine.

 

He completed dual training in General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at the John Hunter Hospital and obtained his fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015. He currently holds a public appointment at the John Hunter Hospital as a Staff Specialist and is also a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle.

Dr Gunathilake has received a number of national and international awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Tony Broe award in Geriatric Medicine (ANZSGM, 2014), IMSANZ advanced trainee travelling scholarship (2013), and the American Academy of Dermatology World Congress Fund travel fellowship (2008). He has a strong research background, furthered by working as a postdoctoral fellow in the University of California San Francisco between 2007 and 2009, and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Gunathilake provides inpatient services to patients admitted through the Lake Macquarie Private Hospital Emergency Department. Outpatient geriatric consultations are provided at the Lake Macquarie Specialist Centre across the road. Patients need a written referral from another doctor, usually their general practitioner, an emergency physician or another medical specialist.
